To me, freedom means having the independence, financial security, and time to enjoy the life you’ve been blessed with. Slavery, on the other hand, is when you’re forced to work without any reward.
Let’s look at an example: the average home price in my area is around $500,000. If you put down 20% as a down payment, that’s $100,000. With today’s national average for a 30-year fixed mortgage at 6.71%, your monthly payments would be about $2,593. Over 30 years, you’d end up paying $31,116 annually, totaling $933,480. This still does not even take in the fact that you will have to maintain it a fix things in it. Alternatively, you could buy a container home on land large enough to build and expand to build a custom home, but for now, consider placing a $20,000 container home. That’s 20% of your the cost of your down payment, and you wouldn’t have any payments for 30 years except for the cost of the land. In Oregon, we recently experienced a historic wildfires, the most extensive area of land burned in the state’s history of all recorded time. Insurance companies are well aware of climate change and global warming. In many areas, they’re either refusing to insure homes or increasing rates significantly to the point of insanity making it very hard to finance or sell your home. Then there are property taxes that will only rise, and utilities that will also increase. In this type of housing you can power it with wind and solar. It seems like there are many entities you will have to pay on what you’ve investment to just to have a roof over your head. To have a good job you may have to go to college of 4 to 10 years to get a career that will pay you enough to afford the payments, and what will that cost additionally. Is this what you think freedom is? Corporations and government making you a debt slave? It feels like the world is designed to push us into debt this is what companies and governments want us to do. But as individuals, we’re the ones who get to decide what we want to do and how we want to spend our money or invest. That’s called freedom of choice. With the advent of new building methods for modular homes, we now have more options. The 21st Century Road to Housing Act officially became federal law in July 2026, which could be a real game-changer for Oregon!
